Mesa’s Upcycled Holiday Wreath Contest

Have you ever wondered what happens when competitive and creative merge into one? Kat and I recently found that out as we entered the City of Mesa’s upcycled holiday wreath contest! It was a race of glue guns in this competition, everyone making wreaths out of recycled products and old household items. Milk cartons, toilet paper rolls, Q-tips, magazines, CDs…anything can be made into a festive and eye-catching holiday wreath!

There were so many creative wreaths entered into this competition, so Kat and I were honored to have taken home second and third place respectively. A plaza win!! :)

First place

The main body of this wreath was made out of unwound film from a VHS tape! It was displayed in the Royale movie theater right next to the plaza. How clever is that? She also incorporated scratch lotto tickets and cut open soda cans into the piece.

Second place

Does this wreath look familiar to anyone? Well it should, because it’s the tire wreath that Kat made for Halloween! She removed the cobwebs and pumpkins and added a beautiful newspaper bow to make it festive. She also added tin foil and pieces of an old scarf for extra detail.

Third place

 This is my hippie denim wreath. I used pipe insulation as the frame, then covered it with an old denim dress. I used the zipper to make the legs of the peace sign and added buttons for some extra flair. I love how it turned out, and it’s back in my house now, ready for a blue Christmas!{Kat and I accepting our awards with the first place winner, the Mayor of Mesa and Santa}

Here are a few other entries that we loved:

{This was one of  my favorites! They used softballs and baseballs in their holly, and they even attached a worn-out glove to the side! Bravo!}
{This wreath exemplifies the fact that recycled products can look elegant! I’m pretty positive that it was made out of toilet paper rolls that were cut up and painted.}

{Don’t you love the way this CD wreath shines?}

The wreaths were displayed in shops up and down Main Street, a fun way to spread some Christmas cheer to shoppers. We want to give out a big thanks to the Mesa Arts Center for hosting such a fun event, we hope they’ll continue to engage the community in creativity!

Oh, and remember, there’s only 3 more shopping days left until Christmas! Beat the chaos at the mall and come into the Antique Plaza. You’ll find great presents, and maybe even a little junk to make an awesome wreath out of. :)
